ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters in this book. The book examines some of the issues researchers encounter when they conduct research on groups who would otherwise remain silent and focuses on extremist groups in England. It emphases some of the challenges associated with conducting research on marginalised communities. The book focuses on exploring how theoretical contributions can inform how we challenge and interrogate the research process. It addresses the complexities associated with researching the other, particularly in relation to the tensions associated with research on a Chuj Maya community in Guatemala. The book explores the ethical issues associated with researching those who have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) in a secondary school in Scotland. It focuses on those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the use of participatory research methods to examine school and learning experiences.
