ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates that researchers involved in research for a vulnerable group such as the Roma do experience a number of challenges. Mertens promotes the idea of a research perspective that focuses on transformation, human rights and social justice in an effort to view research paradigms in the public interest. The chapter provides six different research studies serve as examples: The first two studies both deal with the identification and characteristics of our context in terms of the living conditions, occupation, education and social networks of the Roma population. The third study reveals the degree of Romas dependency on benefits. Studies four and five are related to educational issues, that Roma childrens school performance and the schools contribution to the acquisition of social skills. The sixth study discloses frequent demands for mediation between Roma and services and institutions on the part of the Roma population and the Programs strategies in covering them.
