ABSTRACT

Some major old bridges are iconic masterpieces: beautiful structures, engineering marvels of their times, built high over major water bodies, offering dramatic water and cityscape views. Some of these iconic bridges have pedestrian promenades that were part of their original design, and these classic bridge promenades have things to teach about how spectacular pedestrian-oriented public spaces can coexist with major traffic arteries. New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge are perhaps the most outstanding classic bridge promenades and these are the subjects here.
