ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at research on Myanmar's diaspora and exiled populations. It provides a discussion of the distinct trajectories of different groups of people in the diaspora and points out to themes that have been highlighted across the different populations. The chapter argues that the human rights paradigm and its resulting implications have narrowed the topics for analysis and explores by interested scholars. As a result, the demographic and geographical diversity of the diaspora has been perceived as limited. The chapter aims to broaden the perspective on the Myanmar diaspora and points to current and emerging concerns of those living outside Myanmar's border. The successful creation of the international news and information network by Myanmar activists is well documented. The chapter illustrates the diverse nature of the Myanmar diaspora. It highlights the persistent analytical focus on the Myanmar diaspora in Thailand and the influence of global discourses on topics chosen for exploration by scholars interested in the Myanmar diaspora.
