ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the nature of the interaction between crime, terrorism and technology is more than just an intersection. It addresses some of the aspects of a more hybrid model of malicious acts where theoretical components of terrorism frameworks mix with criminal aspects, in hopes of providing the reader with a more flexible and adaptable perspective on the convolution of crime, terrorism and technology. Digital technology plays a dual role in both the criminal and terrorist enterprise. Digital technology has also acted as a catalyst in providing criminals with an inexpensive way to establish a global marketplace. Traditional policies and strategies of deterrence may break down as new emerging technologies allow smaller organic entities entry into the world of large-scale destruction. Often the research and anti-proliferation efforts focused on direct, proactive efforts by terrorist groups to acquire information, raw materials and operational knowledge of weapons of mass destruction.
