ABSTRACT

The gender gap in educational attainment among Black students has gained national media attention. Not only are Black women more likely than Black men to enroll in college shortly after graduating high school (69 percent vs. 57 percent; Lopez and Gonzalez-Barrera, 2014), they are also more likely to graduate within six years (44 percent vs. 35 percent; US Department of Education, 2014). These numbers have been used to (re)create a racial narrative about the success of Black women and the underachievement of Black men.
