ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by tracing the evolution of the cyber domain and its role in military operations. It assesses the current situation surrounding the use of the cyber domain in armed conflict. This will be done by examining the cyber domain's effect on the five parameters such as mandate, consent, operational environment, relative force composition and strength, and conflict intensity. Cyberspace can be utilised in a wide array of different ways, such as in combination with other military means to show strength of force and ability to strike at multiple fronts at the same time. The chapter highlights a few interesting challenges pertaining to internationality and the cyber domain. While the technological developments that people have seen over the last few decades have provided both additional challenges and advantages to conducting international operations, it is still more science fiction than reality to imagine future operations as bloodless cyber wars.
