ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of the remittances from Jordanian workers abroad in the light of the limited available data. Jordanian workers show a very positive response to the high demand for their labour services in the region. This stems from the fact that Jordan's manpower enjoys a high level of education and technical skills, much needed by the oil-producing states to implement their ambitious development plans financed by substantial oil revenues. Labour migration in the Middle East is believed to create a pattern which is distinctive to the economies in the region because it is of a temporary rather than a permanent nature. The Royal Scientific Society in Jordan conducted a sample survey to study the socio-economic implications of the migration of Jordanian workers, with emphasis on remittances. The results of the survey indicated that the larger part of remittances was devoted to consumer purposes.
