The world is far from being food secure. The current food systems fail to satisfy the nutritional needs of the human population. According to the estimates of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO 2015), globally 795 million people are undernourished between 2014 and 2016. This means that hundreds of millions of individuals live in hunger and do not get sufficient calories from the food they consume. Furthermore, an even greater number suffers from lack of necessary micronutrients. It has been estimated, for example, that around two billion people are iron deficient (see, e.g., Pinstrup-Andersen 2009: 7) and that almost a third of the world’s population fail to get enough iodine from their food (see, e.g., Korthals 2015: 243).
