ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the important relationship between leadership and employee trust. It reviews the literature on trust in the leader, and discusses work on mutual trust between leader and follower. Trust between leaders and followers is crucial in being able to exert this kind of influence efficiently and effectively without the need for coercion or constant close monitoring. Many different leader behaviours have been related directly to trust in the leader and to subsequent attitudinal and behavioural outcomes. Transformational and charismatic leadership are related, yet while attributions of charisma and the strongly related element of inspirational motivation through a communicated vision are central to both charismatic and transformational leadership, transformational leadership was originally conceptualized as being broader. Besides character and behaviour of the leader, individual differences as well as behaviour on the part of the follower may play a role in the development of trust between leaders and followers.
