ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights similarities and differences between intra- and inter-team trust. It reviews efforts to integrate trust research across the intra- and inter-team levels and articulate an agenda for future research, discussing possible advancement of theory and measures regarding trust in teams. The chapter discusses the antecedents and consequences of trust at each level. Trust has become one of the most frequently studied constructs in organizational research. Intra-team trust is defined as the shared generalized perceptions of trust that team members have in their team, including their fellow teammates and their team leader. Research on intra-team trust has historically received only scant attention, but is becoming more and more frequently the object of scientific studies. Feelings of psychological intimacy emerge from high trust across horizontal and vertical intra-team relationships. The value of trust between teams in terms of predicting their performance seems to be considerably lower compared to the value of trust within teams.
