ABSTRACT

This chapter explores clear convergences between physical cultural studies (PCS) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) with respect to the ways in which CSR has engaged with physical culture. Initially, the focus of CSR was on individual decision-making of leaders of companies, which was subsequently expanded to that of the company itself. With respect to further convergence between CSR and PCS, and in line with the multi-disciplinarity of a PCS sensibility, research that emanates from outside the field of 'sport' adds to the contemporary state of play. In the current moment, CSR has been further extended to include a focus on the entire supply chain as well as industries. Confounding the definitional complexity, CSR can also be understood as a discredited term. By way of summary, is all too clear that CSR research is dominated by analysis of professional sport, which can often miss the contributions from other(ed) physical cultural forms.
