ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in this book. Sustainable development cannot be fully measured by the conventional GDP, which intensively highlights the needs of current generations. Green economy or green growth raised as the central issue at the Rio 20 will require fundamental changes of the current economic systems to enable sustainable consumption and production. The policy measures for promoting green economy also vary widely, from tax and allowance to subsidy reform, environmental regulations and information, technological innovation, investment in green infrastructure and green procurement. The indicators adding or deducting from these factors will provide a more holistic picture of global environmental impacts caused by the consumption in one country. The Better Life Index proposes multiple indicators to be relevant to human well being and suggested one methodology to aggregate these indicators into one and to customize those taking into account the national context, enabling cross border comparison and more precise estimations of well-being.
