ABSTRACT

An analysis of the conditions and qualities necessary for maintaining a long term relationship is made based on the author’s observations and inquiries. Conclusions are drawn from the analysis.

Marriage has become major business in our society or it might be more accurate to say that weddings are such. There is a great need in marriage for the partners to have a realistic view of the relationship, including its obligations and perils, in order to insure its success. The combination of having one’s freedom appreciated, valued, and respected initially creates a mutuality of positive feeling. It further causes each spouse to realize that she or he is in the marriage because of wish, not requirement, which in turn creates greater respect for and dedication to the relationship. If the spouses can allow each other the freedom to grow and to share their growth there may be a strong bond which will aid in the longevity of the marriage. Therefore most of what we learn about marriage is from our parents and that is not always the best source of information and emulation for long term relationships.
