ABSTRACT

Internal family systems (IFS) therapy developed by Richard Schwartz views multiplicity of mind as a normal human phenomenon and makes use of systems thinking in the realm of the mind. IFS therapy holds that each partner has an internal system of sub-personalities or “parts,” as well as an unwounded Self. The IFS model sees couple conflict as various parts of the partners reacting to each other. IFS couples therapy has a protocol for helping couples resolve their conflicts that moves from internal exploration to interpersonal connection. IFS holds that partners who are caught in patterns of conflict usually have vulnerable parts and protective parts that contribute to these patterns. Tracking protective sequences is one of an IFS therapist’s first inquiries with a couple. The purpose of tracking protective sequences is to help couples understand the vulnerable feelings and needs that fuel the fire of their repetitive fights.
