ABSTRACT

The Support Talk skill provides an opportunity for partners to share their needs and preferences, and to be able to provide effective support to each other, without giving advice. The purpose of Support Talk is to create a space for one partner to share a concern outside the relationship while the other partner listens. It allows partners to provide and receive support without disruption from other types of talk. In addition to strategies for reducing negative conflict, Prevention and Relationship Education Program also contains interventions for increasing support in romantic relationships and activities for helping partners identify the types of support that are most important for each of them. Just by checking in with one another and scheduling times for Support Talks, couples are likely to see positive results because they are reminded that their partners desire to be supportive.
