ABSTRACT

The Biopsychosocial-Spiritual (BPSS) interview was developed to help family therapists extend their assessment beyond common mental health or relational questions and explore how clients’ physical health history and spiritual beliefs influence psychosocial well-being, and vice versa. The use of a BPSS assessment has become more important than ever due to the growth of integrated care (IC). IC is a model of care whereby mental or behavioral health providers work alongside other health care providers simultaneously, in brief therapy or health care visits, to provide one to three sessions that are, on average, 15 to 20 minutes in length. The four assessment dimensions of the BPSS interview method include: biomedical—physical history and current health concerns, psychological—emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns and current states, social—individual and couple relational history and existing support systems, and spiritual—beliefs and meaning attributed to the current challenges.
