ABSTRACT

A physiological stress response occurs when a person recognizes a stressor that activates the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is comprised of the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system. Chronic physiological stress can strain the cardiovascular system, dysregulate stress hormones, and prevent normal parasympathetic activity from occurring. These long-term effects can contribute to the development of chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, obesity, or diabetes; impair cognitive functioning; contribute to the anxiety and depressive disorders; and endanger relational health. Diaphragmatic breathing is a technique that focuses on helping couples breath in a way that strengthens their respiratory muscular system. It changes their physiological activity by slowing their heart rate and breathing frequency while increasing ventilation and oxygen saturation. Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique used to help clients create awareness of tension and relaxation in their bodies.
