ABSTRACT

One of the most recurrent complaints in couple therapy is the lack of communication between partners; consequently, it is one of the most common issues discussed in treatment. For some couples, the quantity of verbal communication is insufficient. This problem is addressed through teaching, modeling, and reinforcing clear communication skills in session and through homework assignments that focus on increasing verbal communication at home. The literature on couple therapy is filled with information and techniques about communication; however, there is inadequate knowledge about the depth of communication, ranging from superficial conversation to self-reflective discussions of patterns within a couple’s relationship. The entire issue of communication is ambiguous and vague. Often couples present for treatment with “communication problems” and therapists repeatedly fail to clarify the difference between quality, quantity, clarity, and positivity of verbal interactions. The ability to fluidly move among the levels of communication depth and richness will enhance the couple’s sense of connection and relationship satisfaction.
