ABSTRACT

There are so many reasons to work with couples as a psychoanalyst. I once invited a Freudian colleague to speak at a family therapy class of mine. He said, “What’s wonderful about being a couples therapist is that you have a place to discharge your own aggression.” I thought this was a novel, if not altogether salubrious, motivation. But in truth, the essential experience of couples therapy, including the vibrancy and immediacy of interaction, the very different experience of participation, and the intellectual yield of examining and expanding basic psychoanalytic concepts, is very gratifying.
