ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an asset-based approach to understanding Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and to offer evidence of their efforts to improve student success. The Minority Serving Institutions Student Success Collaborative (MSISSC) is focused on learning from others experiences in a cross institutional mentoring partnership that occurred among institutional pairs within a larger community of practice focused on improving student progress. The chapter describes important elements of the collaborative work among the HSIs that participated in the MSISSC. First, the chapter describes the successful efforts of mentor campuses, detailing programs and services that have worked in serving HSIs diverse student bodies. Then, it turns student attention to the initiatives put in place by mentee campuses as a result of the collaboration. The chapter specifically describes some of the challenges that HSIs institutions faced as they sought to effectively serve their students. It describes how organizational learning and behavioral change occurred in an HSI community of practice, sharing implications for other institutions.
