ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of institutional variation among four year Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) according to certain student and institutional factors known to affect student outcomes. The chapter explores in depth about the institutional diversity among four year HSIs. It first discuss about the existing research on four year HSIs institutional contexts and student outcomes, because of the concern about the extent to which HSIs are fostering positive outcomes for students, it aslo describes a conceptual lens that addresses the relationship between institutional contexts and student outcomes. The application of lens to present findings, illustrating the diverse characteristics of a national census of four year HSIs and a sub group of four year HSIs with general undergraduate missions, rather than missions primarily focused on sub baccalaureate degrees or on specialized fields of study is done. It concludes the implications of this institutional diversity for future research, policy, and practice concerning four year HSIs.
