ABSTRACT

Each children has an environment generated for them over which they have little or no control and it is from this constructed world that they are required to make some sense. The immediate family is the place where children will first spend their time. It has been established that very young children will experience a range of places in a relatively short period of time. As children move between the places people have created for them, people need to ensure that these places are truly fit for purpose and the transitions that occur between them are made as straightforward as possible. Children need to be listened to because they are part of the whole community, both involved in and contributing to community activities and initiatives. The future of children's places is a challenge to which the trainers of early years practitioners will need to rise, with no one underestimating the difficulty of predicting the future in an increasingly uncertain world.
