ABSTRACT

This chapter explores teaching, learning and the curriculum from the point at which the author entered higher education as an undergraduate student. The national curriculum plays a different role, as it refers to the statutory requirements in relation to the nature of subjects and the content to be taught and learned. The chapter embraces constructivist approach to teaching and learning. The approach allows for a different interpretation of the curriculum, provides strong focus on learning and discusses how to ensure concepts and knowledge are understood. Constructivism as an approach to teaching and learning can be applied to any context if it is properly understood. The national curriculum needs to promote more opportunities for critical thinking which challenges assumptions and endorses high level reasoning. The society that children are growing up in is complex and the challenge therefore, is to make children's learning fit for their future.
