ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the author's ongoing investigation into lighting master plans, which began in 2003. His approach includes academic research into development and implementation, as well as practice-based experience of authoring lighting plans and consulting with municipalities. This is because the long-acting contribution of urban lighting is determined especially by the stakeholders' overarching cooperation. Awareness of lighting design has grown considerably in municipal planning practice. This is particularly the case for the strategic and coordinated development of the various types and sources of artificial lighting in a city, and the development of so-called lighting master plans. The processes of urban lighting should be evaluated appropriately and optimised in view of the dimensions presented earlier on in this contribution. The historical review reminds us that, despite all the new challenges in the field of urban lighting, we do not have to reinvent the wheel but can build and draw on experiences of the past.
