ABSTRACT

In the latter half of the 20th century there was an enormous expansion of street lighting in urban areas, and along trunk roads between urban areas. The beginning of the 21st century witnessed questions about light pollution, and there were demands for reductions in light pollution in some areas. The economic recession of 2008-2014, with pressure on public finances and the need to make carbon savings, is prompting decreases in light pollution, as highway agencies and local authorities in the UK reduce road and street lighting.
