ABSTRACT

Central goals of placemaking are community-based planning and building that reflects community values and promotes neighborhood pride. Citizen participation is a fundamental feature of Project for Public Spaces' (PPS) philosophy of placemaking. In informal settlements, public spaces can be lacking altogether, increasing tension and stress for people who live in crowded and inadequate conditions. When Placemaking process is conducted with transparency and good faith from the bottom up, results in a place where the community feels ownership and engagement, and where design serves function. Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) believes that participatory planning and design are key to sustainable development. Placemaking promotes a simple principle: if you plan cities for cars and traffic, you get cars and traffic. The evolution of cities is based on commerce linking urban and rural economies. A broad public health agenda can greatly strengthen a public space agenda. The Power of 10 is a concept to kick-start the Placemaking process.
