ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the existing crisis and risk literature within emerging mobile media and technologies to include augmented-reality (AR) applications, wearable technologies, and the implementation of gamification principles within crisis communication. Mobile messages and other forms of mobile technologies have been implemented in various crisis and disaster situations over the years, allowing emergency management professionals to send out real-time updates and alerts about their location and work environments. The integration between mobile phones and social media has risen over the past few years as well. Two distinct areas involving emerging mobile and experiential media will have direct implications on crisis planning, risk-communication safety exercises, simulation workshops, crisis and emergency response teams, and postcrisis recovery protocols. Thinking about transparency and social and mobile media during a crisis also requires practitioners to consider privacy issues. Uncertainty reduction theory explains the human incentive to seek information.
