ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about a Math lesson took place at Orchard Hill School. The Math lesson collects data from each student about which type of hat they would like everyone to make for the Thanksgiving celebration and organizing that data in a graph to represent the results. Collecting the class votes would facilitate representing the results in a graph, gives a visual representation of the results, as well as the decision of what hat to make. The students need a predictable environment with a predictable progression through the lessons to be able to participate successfully. A combination of having clear behavior expectations and clear learning goals, which are both explicitly taught using the learning scale, allows the students to be able to access the lessons and learn more easily in the classroom. Integrating appropriate communication and appropriate behavior into the academic lessons maximizes student learning and provides the greatest opportunity for maximized student engagement.
