ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about six students with severe disabilities and describes their individualized education plans (IEP) goals. The school policy is always to make sure there are discrete tasks for every level of the scale and a learning goal that is demonstrable by the students. It looks different when different students complete the task. In addition to the learning goal or, as a support in aiding students in reaching the learning goal, the lesson was designed to feature practice in Math skills, for example, number recognition, one-to-one correspondence and counting. Students were encouraged to interact with each other, calling each other by name and giving feedback on their responses. Creating achievable tasks for a student might require simplification of the learning goal. High expectations are desirable for all students, but there is no reason to go over their heads in a way that will be meaningless to them.
