ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about nine students with severe disabilities and describes their daily instructional goals. Post-school plans for these students are likely to result in placement at adult learning centers where they can continue to receive instruction in adult daily living and pre-employability skills development. Students learn how Math is used to produce a product for a local yarn store. The lesson incorporates a variety of technology and measurement strategies. The multiple components of the learning activity can cross academic standards content areas and individual education plan (IEP) goals. Students progress from needing continual adult assistance to being able to perform every step of the project independently. Student learning behaviors need to be supported and contribute to the advancement of social skills. The writing tasks meet other curricula and IEP goals in student preparation for post-school living. These activities coordinate and align with other standards and goals within the students' overall schedule of courses.
