ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the lesson took place at Orchard Hill School. The lesson is an English Language Arts (ELA) with the goal of identifying literary devices. The lesson begins with a whole group reading of the Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. The students had an opportunity to practice identifying rhyming words before breaking off into small groups for deeper discussion and additional reinforcement. Finally, the class came back together as a whole group to participate in an exciting game of Green Eggs and Ham Tic Tac Toe. The school builds specific tasks for every level of the scale, as well as having a learning goal that can be demonstrated by each student. In addition to the learning goal, lessons are designed to feature practice in reading and/or language art skills, such as letters, sight words and spelling. The focus on student engagement shows improvement of their learning, but reduces the potential of behavioral issues.
