ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization has stated, 'obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century'. The most stringent treatment is the behavioral weight loss (BWL) program. The BWL program targets diet and exercise through behavioral modification techniques. Cognitive remediation therapy aims at promoting reflection on thinking styles, developing metacognition, and helping explore and apply new thinking strategies in everyday life. Manualised cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) has been shown to be effective at addressing cognitive inefficiencies in anorexia nervosa, and in turn addressing cognitive styles, such as inflexible thinking and extreme attention to detail, helping patients with AN to stay in the treatment and improving their cognitive style and quality of life. There is still much to learn, about the benefits of CRT. However, the majority of participants found CRT beneficial, and many seem to be losing weight. Taking into account that weight loss usually stops after therapeutic contact ends, long-term follow-up data is very important.
