ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces readers to relationships between indigenous identities and leadership in diverse educational environments and institutions and will benefit policy makers in education, student affairs professionals, scholars, faculty and students. Tyler Parisien is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa with his hometown region being within the beautiful Turtle Mountains in North Dakota. His first awareness of leadership stems back to a classroom experience he had in elementary school, a moment in his life that will always be a vivid memory to him. When he was asked what his leadership style is and how he carries himself as an Indigenous leader, the first thing that came to his mind was "The Seven Teachings" of the Anishinaabe. These teachings are as follows: wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth. The University of North Dakota (UND) has an amazing support system, staff, and center for its multicultural students and it is this combination of support.
