ABSTRACT

"Green Keynesianism" refers to a governmentally planned investment programme with a focus on green infrastructure. The idea of green Keynesianism initially seems too conservative to merit as a transitionary programme. It indeed seems as a continuation of the status quo: growth of consumption and sustained capitalist power relations. Keynesianism can be understood in different ways, and that some interpretations of the Keynesian tradition might actually be useful as transitionary politics. The idea of green Keynesianism is that a governmentally administered rebuilding of basic infrastructure is necessary regardless of what other strategies for achieving sustainability might be chosen or necessary given that a belief in "market mechanisms" carrying out the necessary transformation is ruled out. The strategies of political economy of sustainability can be divided into degrowth strategies and strategies based on "green growth": the possibility of sustaining growth while reacting to the ecological crisis is a major division line.
