ABSTRACT
This chapter presents some of the difficulties involved in designating the genre of a very widespread Turkic oral heroic tradition, the Koroglu cycle. With all its complexity and variety of content, form, and performative aspects, the Koroglu cycle is an especially appropriate illustration of the complications that may arise with regard to genre issues. This cycle is a vast complex of narratives stretching over the entire Turkic-speaking world, extending into neighboring areas, and existing in many variations that differ considerably from each other both in content and form. The chapter discusses the Koroglu cycle in general terms, noting how the criteria for genre designation may apply to its many versions. Then it focusses on one particular genre criterion as applied to one particular version: the prosimetric form of the Azerbaijani version of Alexander Chodzko. Finally some suggestions will be made regarding possible alternative ways to describe works such as these.
