ABSTRACT

In early December, 2005, a cargo ship carrying masks, costumes and scenery of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano’s production of Arlecchino, Servant of Two Masters was caught in a winter storm off the coast of Faial Island, one of the Central Group of the Azores. Local sailors struggled for weeks to rescue the ship; but another, more damaging storm was to strike before year’s end, making any rescue impossible. Buffeted night and day, the ship rolled shoreward, and released its precious cargo to the waves.
