ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the activities undertaken in outer space known as Earth observation, remote sensing, or the gathering of information through the use of satellite technology, are governed, with a focus on regulation at national level. In Chapter 7 of this same volume, Sa’id Mosteshar discusses the international aspects of remote sensing, notably the UN Principles Relating to Remote Sensing of the Earth from Outer Space1 and other space-based international humanitarian arrangements under the Disaster Charter,2 as well as data-sharing initiatives for aid-relief, such as UN Spider.3
