ABSTRACT
Ending is a process and needs to be given time within the trajectory of the therapy; thinking about ending must take place as a central component of the therapy and not be viewed as outside of the therapeutic process. The decision to end parent-infant psychotherapy activates a final stage in the actual relationship between the therapist and the parent/s and Baby. Ending therapy is based on the parents and therapist's assessment of their position in relation to these two axes. The ending centers on re-working the dependency that has developed during the therapy and the separation from this attachment figure and the therapeutic setting. The Baby's own communications of thanks may be subtle and also require the therapist's acknowledgement. The therapist needs to ensure that the therapeutic environment remains as facilitating as it was in the former stages of treatment.
