ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the varied and fast-emerging uses of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and open education in the developing world. It discusses how graduate students in instructional technology at the University of Houston are helping faculty members to co-design and develop MOOCs for the professional development of K-16 teachers as part of their postgraduate studies. According to Karen Head, single-provider models must give way to greater consideration of the highly diverse nature of MOOCs and potential open education participants. Of course, Distributed Open Collaborative Course (DOCCs) are but one of the many MOOC-like spin-offs or derivatives which are currently being piloted and researched today; and undoubtedly many others will arise in the coming decade.
