ABSTRACT
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are one class of "Open Educational Services" (OES). MOOC platforms for organizing and delivering the multimedia content integrated with the social media tools for engaging individuals and various assessment and analytic tools provide feedback on learning and teaching. Higher education can blend MOOCs into their educational ecosystem without major disruptions and expand its ability to serve growing and diverse student needs for alternative modes of instruction. Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) Content Builder can create IMS Common Cartridges with Creative Commons licenses which significantly improve the ability of people to share and use a particular community's collection of Open Educational Resources (OERs). The open educational services of MERLOT will continue to support the learning and teaching for those who choose to use MERLOT. Ideally, others will find unique ways to incorporate MERLOT in their MOOCs as well as in any new open education initiatives around the world.
