ABSTRACT

The media arts provide students with access to advanced content and concepts and with opportunities to demonstrate complex reasoning and sophisticated thinking skills. This chapter focuses on producing media arts which helps students to understand and develop the specialized literacies, skills, and techniques necessary to participate in the ever-increasing media world in which they live. As teachers engage students in producing, they are invited to take up the discourse of media artists as they engage in developing and refining artistic techniques such as tool selection, cinematography, sound, and editing. While the students will be tasked with producing a media arts project, the teacher will focus instruction toward the students' development of artistic knowledge, skills, and decision making. The students' participation in the media arts project provided them with opportunities to develop and use media literacies. Media literacies typically are defined as the ability to access, analyze, and create.
