ABSTRACT

The nature of music texts and literacies involved in music creativity is possibly the most difficult of all literacy processes to define. The definition refers to literacy acts as negotiating and creating texts. This chapter is not simply about creating texts; it is also about both negotiating and creating texts in the nurture of musical creativity. The important aspect of music literacy related to creating is its tendency to blur the lines between text and context. Bringing up these blurred lines is an attempt to recognize real-world complexity involved in musical creativity and to present the notion of negotiating and creating texts as applied to its nurture. Music instructors who take it upon themselves to address musical creativity can present appropriate and authentic musical texts and provide guidance in negotiating and creating them. The act of creating usually involves being creative within parameters, either given or self-imposed. These parameters form context for creation and, indeed, involve negotiation during creation.
