ABSTRACT

I began my work in development as a volunteer teacher in Kenya in the late 1980s. During our teaching days, my wife and I traveled on a shoestring budget throughout Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi, and Uganda. We admired the raw beauty of the region and enjoyed the legendary hospitality of its people. Twenty years later, we returned to East Africa when I had the honor of serving as the U.S. ambassador to Tanzania. Since my diplomatic service ended, I have been back to the region numerous times for organizations such as Malaria No More, the Initiative for Global Development, and the World Wildlife Fund.
