ABSTRACT

The authors of the country and regional chapters were asked to provide an analysis of ongoing and anticipated environmental changes that are likely to take hold in the country under study. They also reviewed the main contours of past and current U.S. foreign policy toward each country and evaluated the effects and longer-term signifi cance of environmental changes for U.S. economic, security, and social interests. The fi rst part of this chapter summarizes this analysis by looking at the geophysical and socioeconomic effects of environmental change and resource scarcity and the effects on national institutions and relations with neighboring countries. The second part of this chapter highlights the fi ve pathways through which environmental change and resource scarcity affect U.S. prosperity and security interests.
