ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that global learning is gaining new value, since the speed at which knowledge becomes outdated has to lead to new modes of learning. In relation to education for sustainable development, the competencies focus on operating with knowledge about sustainable development and recognising problems of non-sustainable development. Beyond education of environmental policy, an education for sustainable development also requires new cultural, social and economic issues. All sustainable development programs must consider the three spheres of sustainability: environment, society, and the economy. An adequate possibility for higher education institutions to train people in sustainability is to implement a multidisciplinary and competency-related masters program relating education for sustainable development. The basic conditions for education for sustainable development, however, differ considerably around the world. Civic education for the sustainable development combines both education for sustainable development and education for democratic citizenship.
