ABSTRACT

From ancient times up to the present, numerous philosophers and scientists have focused on the complex relationship between mind and matter. For instance, the question of whether body and mind should either be considered as independent or interacting entities was famously addressed by René Descartes in the 17th century. According to his dualistic approach, minds and bodies are radically different kinds of substances that cannot causally interact (Vieillard-Baron, 1991). However, over time, various philosophical perspectives rejecting the body-mind dichotomy have been developed. These approaches, suggesting a close link between bodily and mental processes, significantly inf luence today’s sciences, particularly in the areas of psychology and neuroscience.
