ABSTRACT

Digital technology is important for extending children's narratives in early childhood settings. It allows children to represent their understanding of events and experiences in extended ways beyond traditional formats of drawing. Digital technology allows children to integrate sound, photos, images, sketches and voice commentary. The chapter presents digital narrative case study that the digital technology implemented allowed young children to broaden and build their knowledge structures. Both children and teacher reported positive learning dispositions after engaging in the digital narratives. Children were able to compare their stories and extend each other's understanding via social interaction. Children created shared narratives that built on each other's ideas. One of the strengths of digital narratives is the ability of a recorded story to be played and replayed, told and retold to provide different meanings. Digital narratives are portable and can be moved around and in and out of a kindergarten space. Digital narratives provide enriched opportunities to provide new meaning of children's lives.
