ABSTRACT

In On Teaching, Tang dynasty scholar Han Yu described the responsibilities of teachers, stating, “Teachers convey doctrine, impart professional knowledge, and resolve doubts”. Han also emphasised the function of teachers in transferring reason and knowledge and answering questions, asserting that “people are not born with knowledge”, but must study under teachers to learn. However, the modern era of rapid knowledge advancements and network technology innovations has influenced and altered student learning models. In addition, network technology has threatened to replace the functions and roles of teachers gradually. In view of this, establishing the ideal image of a teacher (encompassing the responsibilities and roles of teachers) that corresponds with the contemporary era is crucial. Cultivating prospective teachers who conform to this ideal image through pre-service teacher education (which includes designing relevant courses for enhancing the ability of prospective teachers to use information to impart knowledge and provide guidance and counselling for resolving doubts) is even more critical.
