ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Road Map for Kindergarten through second grade. Using the overarching themes described in previous chapter: Cause and Effect, Innovation and Progress, The Represented World, Sustainable Systems, and Optimizing the Human Experience, the K-2 Road Map describes innovative and integrated approaches for the teaching and learning of these themes from a problem-/project-based learning (PBL) perspective. Each theme descriptions in it suggest careers that align with that theme. The chapter overviews K-2 STEM Road Map and the topics that in each grade and the topics and challenges/problems that kindergarten students could tackle. The intent in the chapter is to provide learning modules for teachers that integrate the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with Common Core English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards and positions into five STEM themes.
